Small tips and essentials for your suitcase

- Earplugs: local architecture isn't known for its soundproofing ;

- A headlamp: in case of power outages, though these are quite rare ;

- A money belt: to hide and secure cash and documents ;

- A laminated copy of your passport, keeping the original at your hotel during excursions ;

- A picture-based guidebook like "Point-it" when you don't speak the local language. This handy little guide lets you point to foods and everyday scenes (stations, banks, hospitals, restrooms, meals…).

First-aid kit

Beyond your usual personal hygiene and health products, we recommend packing the following items for a worry-free journey :

· An anti-diarrheal medication (just in case – while available locally, your body often responds better to familiar products) ;

· A small antibacterial gel ;

· Citronella as an insect repellent, plus lavender essential oil to disinfect minor cuts and prevent itching from mosquito bites.

Traveling responsibly

Belize is arguably Central America's most environmentally conscious country. More than 40% of the territory is under official protection. Here are a few tips for responsible travel :

Aerosol sprays, batteries, deodorants and similar products

There is currently no functional recycling system in Belize. Any such products left behind will only worsen the country's pollution, which is why we urge you not to dispose of these items during your stay but instead to bring them back to Europe or Canada where they can be properly processed.

Your drinking water consumption

Tap water is not drinkable in Belize, so you'll need to regularly stock up on bottled water. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle that you can refill at your hotels, or purchasing larger 2L bottles to sustain you throughout your trip while still reducing plastic consumption (a material rarely recycled here). Alternatively, you can bring water purification tablets like Aquatabs or grapefruit seed extract to treat tap water and drink it safely.

Soaps, shampoos and hygiene products

Natural, biodegradable soap and shampoo are your best bet for minimizing your impact on the country. Be aware that much of the wastewater is still discharged directly into the country's waterways and lakes, threatening fragile ecosystems and pristine landscapes.
