Belize follows two distinctly marked seasons. From late November to May, the air dries out, the trails in Cayo become passable again, and visibility on the coral reef often exceeds thirty metres: this is the ideal window to combine diving in Ambergris Caye with exploration of Mayan sites like Caracol or Xunantunich. From June to October, the humid season refreshes the jungle, brings orchids into bloom, and empties the trails, but coincides with the cyclone season. To visit Belize without facing crowds, February and March remain our preferred months; May appeals to those who want to see whale sharks swimming off Placencia.

Unlike its Guatemalan or Mexican neighbors, Belize is not an budget-friendly destination. The Belizean dollar is pegged to the US dollar, and the cayes archipelago charges rates similar to English-speaking Caribbean islands. Plan on approximately €2,800 to €3,500 per person for two weeks in a charming lodge, including private transfers, excluding international flights. A trip focused on jungle, ATM caves and Mayan villages in the south remains more accessible than a stay centered on diving in Turneffe or the Blue Hole, where boat and tanks drive up the cost. Belize is small, but its logistics are surprisingly fragmented: internal Cessna flights, water taxis with shifting schedules, isolated lodges reachable only by radio. Working with an English-speaking local agency based on the ground means avoiding booking headaches and accessing addresses that don't appear on international platforms. We've been working from San Ignacio with Mayan guides, Garifuna fishermen from Hopkins, and biologists who know every inch of the reef. This proximity allows us to adjust a Belize itinerary in real time, slip in a night at a Toledo chocolate maker's, or reschedule a dive if the weather turns. It's this flexibility, above all, that transforms a stay.

A good Belize itinerary unfolds in three chapters. First, the Cayo forest to the west, with the sacred cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal and its calcified skulls, the waterfalls of Mountain Pine Ridge, and the Maya city of Caracol lost beneath the canopy. Then the south, more understated, where Hopkins and the Placencia Peninsula open doors to Garifuna culture, the jaguars of Cockscomb Basin, and the deserted cayes of the barrier reef.
